Fortnite developers to continue their fight against Apple for fair competition
US district court judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers gave the long-awaited decision following a 12-month court battle of epic proportions. The ruling stated that Apple didn’t have a monopoly for controlling the App Store. However, iPhone manufacturers can’t stop developers from using their own payment options by linking to their websites.
This means that Epic Games can offer microtransactions for cosmetic items to players and they can pay them through their website directly. The developers had used this method to avoid the high 30% commission from Apple by using their payment options. But, the company then removed the Battle Royale game for not following their guidelines. This eventually became the starting point of one of the most high-profile gaming legal battles of all time.
