Alan Wake 2 Director Explains the Function of Light and Torch in Gameplay

Alan Wake 2 is an upcoming horror game co-developed by juggernaut Epic Games and Remedy Entertainment. A sequel to 2010’s Alan Wake, a modern classic, the series is based on the fictional and titular novelist Alan Wake. Following the story of the protagonist trapped in an alternative dimension for 13 years, the sequel is believed to be one for the ages, especially for gamers who have an affliction toward the horror genre.

Alan Wake 2 will offer mysteries, scares, and stuff of nightmares. The storyline and gameplay both have been a focus of conversation among gamers since their debut public appearance in the initial stage of development.

Director Kyle Rowley and Creative Director Sam Lake provided some behind-the-door insights about Alan Wake 2’s gameplay.  More than an action-horror, this game will offer a survival horror-based experience for players, considering the number of combat skills that will be seen in the game.

The makers are also emphasizing narrative-making over actions, contrary to what was seen in the first outing. In Creative Director Sam Lake’s words, “Less combat, through the whole experience, meaning that we can spend time on building it up.”

Lake then progressed about how the vision is integral for the directors in the game, as they aim to closely follow the gripping nature of Stephen King’s work and the surrealist mind of David Lynch. The function of the torch and light add to the realization of a different vision for the players. The small, yet noticeable, change will add to the element of psychological horror as the central theme of Alan Wake 2.

They believed that horror games also present great horror narratives by creating a great thrilling game atmosphere. For Alan Wake 2, the directors are dedicated to bringing that horror atmosphere to the game by focusing on more puzzle-solving mysteries over action-based combats – “It’s more about the drama, and the characters and the stuff that they go through, and their relationships.”
