Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Reveal What Lessons They Have Learnt From the Infamous ‘Crunch Phase’ of 2020

CD Projekt RED is back with another game in the Cyber Punk 2077 franchise. Named Phantom Liberty, this new game is all set to release this 26th of September on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. After the disappointing result with Cyber Punk 2077: The real world story in 2020, CD Projekt RED is back to set fire again. This time with their hard work and improvisation in Phantom Liberty.
Although The Witcher 3 received immense success worldwide, CD Projekt RED couldn’t match the performance of Cyber Punk 2077: The real world story worth the hype it received from the public. With their upcoming project Phantom Liberty, developers seemed excited and hopeful about seeing some positive signs with Cyber Punk 2077 franchise.
Tit-bits from CD Projekt RED’s plans
Public Relations and Communications front of CD Projekt RED, Michal Platkow-Gilewski in an interview at the Summer Game Fest 2023 spoke about the Studio’s future plans and expectations with Phantom Liberty. Speaking about Crunch, Michal’s interview stated that currently there are many ongoing projects in the studio. He mentioned how developers were working overtime to complete them. This hinted toward the development of The Witcher 4, which will take till 2025 to completely finish and release for the players. Apparently, the studio had planned for a Witcher trilogy. CD Projekt RED is working on almost five total projects with two spin-offs with other studios.

With so much pressure going on, Gilewski confirmed that all these games are at different stages individually. They seemed pretty focused on Phantom Liberty’s performance.
Gilewski confirmed the studio’s goal to delve into long-term projects to limit the crunch. The studio wasn’t concerned about developing a game on their IP address but was more focused on improvised performance in Phantom Liberty gameplay.

CD Projekt RED on dealing with their crunch phase
Gilewski confirmed that the studio felt that they wish to develop their IP and develop more exciting games on it. However, looking at the number of ongoing projects, developers seemed not ready enough to focus on that. Developers in CD Projekt RED engaged in discussions regarding their ambitions with the company. It also involved the results they desire with their work. Gilewski focused on such meetings, calling them a help for future planning. That’s how he expressed the company manages to side line crunch after 2020.
