If there’s one specific quest from various Call of Duty Campaigns where players got scared, it has to be ‘No Russian’. This mission from 2009’s original MW2 is still considered the most controversial COD mission to ever exist in a game from Activision. However, now it seems like the infamous, yet now iconic, quest will soon make a return in a more extreme with Modern Warfare 3.

That appears to be the case according to a studio developer’s recent response. What’s interesting to note is that the rumored new take on the infamous mission may consist of more interactable elements this time. That’s what the original No Russian was missing in Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2.

For the uninitiated, the mission features ruthless villain Vladimir Makarov. He enters into an airport to kill innocent civilians. The quest also involves the player’s character as the one who’s participating in a mass shooting alongside the main antagonist and his men. This style of quest design was something many fans didn’t expect in 2009 when they first witnessed No Russian. Since then, it has been among the most controversial quests in the history of the COD series.

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 approaching its release, there have been speculations about No Russian making a return. Especially, after the reveal of the main Campaign trailer where Makarov can be seen inside a plane, preparing to wreak havoc on innocent passengers.

Now, the infamous mission has even caught the attention of the developers themselves. Recently, Infinity Ward’s game designer Steve Holmes shared his thoughts on a story from a renowned website, focusing on No Russian. Replying to their article, he wrote: “I really enjoyed the IGN piece on @iambadmofo and “No Russian”. The next sentence that he wrote, though, is quite interesting to observe – “However at the end, the author says ‘There is no ideal way in which to make a terrorist attack interactive. Really? We’ll see.”

This post was later deleted by Steve which indicates that something is cooking up. The aforementioned information was shared by media outlet Insider Gaming. All things considered, it appears that one will get to interact with the subjects in the mission if it makes a comeback with MW3.

What more to expect from Modern Warfare 3’s Campaign?

Now speaking of the single-player experience more deeply, fans are surely in for a treat in 2023. Modern Warfare 3 won’t feel like a regular COD campaign at all. In other words, it will bring lots of fresh elements, to say the least.

The Campaign will have something called open-combat missions. This feature will allow the players to finish certain quests in their style, using their tactics and creative strategies. Similar to an open-world RPG, they won’t find themselves stuck to a linear format of following a set rule of approaching a mission. However, this feature will only apply to a small number of quests.

Moreover, the Campaign will also bring back the iconic map of Verdansk. But there’s still mystery hovering over its presence in the game as players are not aware if it will be a part of the main story or not. According to rumors and speculations, it will only appear briefly during the entirety of the single-player mode.
