Valve recently unveiled its latest innovation in gaming technology called the Steam Deck. It is essentially a handheld console that can run PC games that are available on Steam. Thus, it is the perfect mix of the power of a PC and the portability of the Nintendo Switch. The device starts at $399, and Valve says that shipments will begin in December.
Players can also choose from three variants of the Steam Deck. The three models offer 64 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB SSD storage options and cost $399, $529, and $649 respectively. This is quite a respectable price point as the Steam Deck offers tons of other features.
Epic Game’s CEO, Tim Sweeny shared his opinion about the console on Twitter. He referred to the Steam Deck as an “Amazing move by Valve!” Sweeny further went on to describe the console as “A handheld PC/console hybrid running the SteamOS fork of Arch Linux, and it’s an open platform where users are free to install software or their choosing – including Windows and other stores.”

In addition to its unique ability to play PC games on a handheld device, the Deck boasts some solid specifications. It has a 7-inch 1280 x 800 touchscreen for 720p gameplay, which is surrounded by two thumbsticks, two trackpads for FPS games, ABXY buttons, and a D-pad. A built-in gyroscope also helps to make motion control mechanics smoother.

The battery life of the console is some of the most impressive for a handheld device. Players can enjoy 2D games, stream, and support web browsing comfortably for 7-8 hours. One of the coolest features of the Deck is its quick suspend/resume feature. Using this feature, players can pause the game, send the device into sleep mode, and continue from where they last left off. This just enhances the convenience that the console offers.
