Japanese role-playing games like Final Fantasy and Persona have always been pretty long in length. For one, these games have stories that take very long to complete. And then they have numerous side content that makes these games at least double in size when it comes to playtime. Similar is the case with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, according to the game’s director.
He said in a recent interview with the BBC, “I’d say just doing the main story alone, you’re looking at 40 to 50 hours to complete without doing anything else. Then, on top of that, we’ve got so much side content and exploration content in the world. There’s actually more side content than there is main story content. So, if you’re going to really go into everything, dig deep, explore the world, and find everything you’re easily looking at over 100 hours if you want to do everything.”

This means the developers have really put a lot of effort into making this game something special. After all, rebuilding a world that players have already seen at least twice can be a challenge.
The fact that director Naoki Hamaguchi took on this challenge and literally won it is pretty commendable.

Is it important for a game to have hundreds of hours of game time?
One cannot help but wonder how crucial it is for games to be hundreds of hours long. Also, how important it is for them to have so much filler content that almost doubles their playtime.
Many developers have even started going back on this thing; games like Spider-Man 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Mirage are significantly shorter than their predecessors. This means they have cut down significantly on the side content.
