Despite its many flaws, Death Stranding is surely a breathtaking experience for anyone who played the Hideo Kojima title. Kojima has been extensively involved in some of the best names in the industry like the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Death Stranding also had a similar acute impact on players’ memories. However, fans will be surprised to know that behind the cutting-edge visuals of Death Stranding lies a very humble inspirational story. In a recent interview, Kojima acknowledged the influences that made Death Stranding’s designs. The community is startled to know that Kojima took inspiration from 2D-era games for his visual masterpiece.

Such statements from maestros like Kojima only go on to show how simple things can lead to something spectacular.

After breaking away from Konami, Hideo Kojima set up his own shop with the goal to deliver some memorable titles. Released in 2019, Death Stranding received nods from the wider community for its mesmerizing visuals. Set in a post-apocalyptic America, Sam Porter Bridges is one of those who ensures the surviving humans are connected to each other. However, the game was also accused of trying to achieve too much. The wide variety of controls and mechanics led many players to be unable to enjoy the game’s story properly. Death Stranding has also been labeled as a “delivery simulator“. Despite such basic issues, every player accepted the visual craftsmanship of Death Stranding.

Now the community is further stunned as Kojima revealed the 2D style games that indirectly helped to create the aesthetics of his latest game.

A tribute to the 2D era?

During an interview, Kojima was faced with questions from the show host who claimed noticing many classic titles while playing Death Stranding. For instance, he referred to the scene where Porter has to tiptoe on a rope; which the host claimed to come from Donkey Kong. The host also mentioned a fighting scene where an arcade-like style was implemented and suggested that reflects the style of games like Street Fighter.

The question left Kojima smiling like as if being caught. He said the host’s claims were correct and that was the plan. Kojima says, “All old games were in 2D before sandboxes or 3D visuals. Why not enjoy that again in an open-world setting?” He applauded the host’s sharp eye having noticed the details in the game.

With Death Standing 2 in the works, fans will wait eagerly to see what more influences come up in the sequel.
