Infinity Ward’s team incorporated methods of photogrammetry and performance capture in a big way. That’s how they transported the real world into the world of Call of Duty Modern Warfare II. For those who aren’t aware, photogrammetry is a process where high-resolution photos are taken of a person or an object from every possible angle. Eventually, the photos are then stitched together in order to make a believable 3D replica using the software.

Another interesting thing revealed in the video was that until 2015, the characters in Call of Duty games were created digitally. But then, Infinity Ward started to imbibe photogrammetry. Thanks to this technology, now a highly detailed character can be created in just one week compared to six.

A similar process is also used (along with some tools) for showcasing wear and tear on the costumes. After all, COD is a war-based series, and depicting what happens in the real world is a must for its titles. Moreover, the devs also revealed that to show an injury or major wound on a character’s body, they have got black ink mixed with water, and fake Hollywood blood too!

Those who have played the Campaign of Modern Warfare II may remember Ghost’s now-iconic mask. It’s the one he wore on the very first mission in Al Mazrah. It was created practically and then scanned. Later, the 3D artists took over and built it for the game.

While sharing an experience of developing a location for the game based in Mexico, the devs told that they spent six weeks doing photogrammetry in the state of Chihuahua. The process also included aerial shots with drones. It was done to capture expansive landscapes with the sole objective of enhancing the level of natural detail.
