“It Was the Right Call”- Ex-Developer Reveals the Tragic Tale of Titanfall 3

Titanfall 3’s cancelation is one of the most tragic events in gaming history. Titanfall, one of Respawn studio’s most beloved sci-fi action-adventure games, has a vast fanbase and is regarded as one of the primary inspirations for innumerable innovations in the industry. 

The world, however, never saw more than two games in the primary series. While there are numerous rumors and suspicions as to why the game was canceled despite being such a popular and profitable franchise, an ex-Respawn developer recently revealed some truths.

In a recent interview with THE BURNETTWORK, Mohammad Alavi, a former developer at Respawn Entertainment, disclosed that Titanfall 3 was in development for a period of ten months before it was ultimately canceled. 

Alavi explained that during the initial stages of development, they spent three months working on the game, but unfortunately, it did not live up to their expectations. He emphasized that while the progress made was incremental, it lacked the revolutionary nature that had characterized Titanfall 2.

One of the defining features of the Titanfall series is its multiplayer component. Alavi revealed that even the multiplayer aspect of Titanfall 3 encountered significant challenges. The multiplayer team faced considerable difficulties in addressing the issues faced by dedicated fans who cherished the multiplayer experience. This presented a significant obstacle in the development process.

Apex Legends Fanatic Stuns the Community by Simply Turning Something Upside Down

As development on Titanfall 3 encountered setbacks, Alavi shared that the team ultimately made the decision to create a battle royale game set in the same universe. This project would later become known as Apex Legends. The decision to shift focus to Apex Legends and completely cut Titanfall 3 was considered a difficult but necessary choice. In fact, Alavi mentioned, “It was the right call. That is a crazy cut. Such a crazy cut that EA didn’t even know about it for another six months!”

In light of these challenges such as mundane game design, the team decided to shift their focus towards the creation of Apex Legends, a battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe. While the cancellation of Titanfall 3 remains a heartbreaking event for fans, the decision was made with the intention of delivering a polished and satisfying gaming experience, and despite its numerous issues, Apex Legends was the perfect adaptation of the vision that the devs had for a new Titanfall game.
