“It’s a Big Gamble” Baldur’s Gate 3’s Lead Writer Spills the Beans on the Game’s Success

Baldur’s Gate 3 is no doubt one of the biggest surprises of 2023. The game that remained in early access for the better part of three years got a 1.0 launch, and it instantly set the world on fire. Everyone wonders how this happened. After all, the game is not even part of one of those blockbuster franchises.

While everyone keeps speculating on the reason for Baldur Gate 3’s success. Its lead writer has made it clear that this success was no accident!

Computer role-playing games are a niche genre; most do not even know they exist. But there are numerous games in this series that have stood out. But no matter how excellent those games were, none of them was able to reach the success that Baldur’s Gate 3 did. If this game’s lead writer, Adam Smith, is to be believed, this success is owed to a crucial decision the developers made early in the game’s development.

He claims that Larian’s decision to shift the game from isometric to third-person played a big part in its success. During a recent chat with Gamesradar, he claimed, “When I first joined during pre-production, it was a player talking to a character in full 3D models, obviously rough, but it was like, We’re doing this; we’re not isometric anymore. We’re going to bring the camera in close. And it’s a big gamble”.

He has explained that the biggest factor that made it a gamble was the expense that comes with a shift in perspective. A company that works with isometric camera angles starts making third-person RPGs, and they have to start worrying about motion-capturing dialogues and such.

Larian Studios also wanted to make sure that this shift in perspective did not mean that the game was not for their longtime fans. The developer had to make sure Baldur’s Gate 3 retained the feel of its predecessors; it’s a CRPG after all. So, everything from Divinity games came, including choices, open-ended quests, and a large world to explore.

But it looks like all this effort and expense actually paid off. The game is one of the most successful CRPGs ever made. Currently, it’s available for PC players to purchase. Eventually, Larian would release it for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles. Here’s hoping more developers take such risks just so gamers can have an abundance of awesome CRPGs.
