Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will bring Zombies to the modern era of the action series. It’s not just limited to Treyarch’s Black Ops universe anymore. Fans are looking forward to witness the undead inside a completely different setting. However, turns out there were actually plans to have Zombies in the rebooted MW franchise – much sooner than expected!

Modern Warfare 3 wouldn’t have been the first game in its series to feature Zombies had there been a change of plan for its predecessor, back in 2019. Infinity Ward’s rebooted Modern Warfare almost had a mode consisting of ‘undead elements’ – before it was cancelled.

A popular COD YouTuber who goes by the name of TheGamingRevolution recently dropped a video. Talking about the upcoming game from Sledgehammer, he mentioned tons of Zombies-related updates. The content creator discussed multiple possibilities of how MWZ could imbibe certain elements when it comes out.

The YouTuber also touched upon a lesser-known fact regarding Zombies in the Modern Warfare franchise. He revealed that back in 2019, ahead of Infinity Ward’s rebooted title, some of the devs actually thought about inserting a mode having the undead. Basically, the first installment in the revamped series could have been the first title to feature a zombie mode.

Turns out back in 2019, Campaign director Jacob Minkoff gave an interview with playstationlifestyle, where he said, “we’re trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don’t have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today’s conflicts and things we face.”

Yes, the devs from Infinity Ward had clearly dismissed the possibility of Zombies in Modern Warfare 2019. But it seems like a mode was in the early stages to be included in the game. The basic reason why the studio wasn’t ready for this idea was to maintain a feeling of realism, compared to titles from the Black Ops saga.

All things considered, fans won’t be complaining now. After all, they will soon get to experience Zombies in Modern Warfare’s universe.

Talking about this year’s awaited installment, players will receive an open-world mode featuring the undead. It will follow a PvE format instead of taking a PvP approach. The users will need to go against large hordes of the undead in a massive area. Upcoming Warzone map of Urzikstan will act as the main setting. Players will have the option to either form teams together or go solo.

Furthermore, the Zombies mode will be similar to the already popular DMZ title. Players will have to loot items and complete certain mission objectives. Eventually, they will have to make a successful extraction in order to secure the victory.
