The director explains the answer for Ellie not leaving Joel is in her past, which we also get to see in the latest episode. Ellie grew up in a Fedra school, where she had no connection with anyone. But there was this one girl, her roommate Riley, with whom she had a connection. Meanwhile, Riley was sitting calmly as she accepted their fate. But she promised Ellie that they would be together for whatever time they have left. The director reveals this major incident was the reason for Ellie to reject Joel’s request to leave him on the deathbed and run.

Druckmann explained, “But that memory [with Riley] is ringing in Ellie’s ears, and she knows that she is gonna fight till the bitter end cause the person she loves the most in this world is Joel. And she’ll go to any lengths to save him.” Meanwhile, Mazin added, “Ellie is thinking about Riley. And she’s thinking about the fact that Riley didn’t quit on her. Riley didn’t walk away. Riley didn’t let Ellie kill herself. And Ellie is not walking away from Joel.”
