The director explains the answer for Ellie not leaving Joel is in her past, which we also get to see in the latest episode. Ellie grew up in a Fedra school, where she had no connection with anyone. But there was this one girl, her roommate Riley, with whom she had a connection. She once took Ellie to an abandoned mall, which is one of the most beautiful moments in Ellie’s life, as she discovers a person who loves her.
