Sony’s First Ever Product Released 76 Years Ago Shows How the PlayStation Is a Massive Jump

Sony has been popularly known as a technology giant while being associated most commonly with console manufacturing. The PlayStation is something that has fascinated people across the globe for almost three decades now.

However, many of the loyal PlayStation lovers will be shocked to know that Sony wasn’t always a tech giant. In fact, even before the first PS model was released in 1994, the Japanese firm had already launched their first product decades ago. And it wasn’t a gaming product but something that modern-day fans can’t even imagine in their wildest of dreams.

An electric rice cooker was the first-ever product made by PlayStation giant Sony

Jon Erlichman, who’s known for covering stories on technology, recently posted an interesting thread on his Twitter account. While mentioning unknown facts about famous companies’ origin, he shared details on their first-ever products which they made originally compared to what they are known for today.

Among the rest of the facts, one in particular will surely make the PlayStation fans go crazy. Erlichman mentioned that Sony‘s first-ever product was not any high-end device related to gaming. Their maiden product was an electric rice cooker.

This story dates back to the era of World War II, when Sony was not what it is today. During the time between 1945 and 1946, defense contractor, Masaru Ibuka, founded a company named, Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo (Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute).

Despite the company mainly focusing on radio repairs, it eventually made its own product: an electric rice cooker. It was made out of interlocked aluminum electrodes, connected to the bottom of a wooden tub. The disappointing aspect of it was that it didn’t even deliver on what it was produced for. The performance was poor to say the least.

All things considered, this product that was made more than 75 years ago, was a complete disaster. As expected, the electric rice cooker never saw the light of the day as it wasn’t released publicly by Sony.
