The last of us Part 2 starts with a time jump. Ellie is all grown up and living a productive yet distant life in her community. Joel is doing the same in the same community, but they are pretty distant; that is understandable, and it is heavily implied that they have already had a conversation about him saving her. And she has decided to punish Joel for the choice that he made.

This time jump gives a lot of room for more things to happen in that story. And maybe that’s why Craig Mazin also wants the series to jump forward in time in season 2. He recently explained the importance of that time jumps. He explained that a jump in time shows a change in Ellie’s relationship with Joel.

He said, “Of course. I don’t want to pin anything down. Obviously, the time jump is important, to some extent. It reflects the changing nature of Ellie’s relationship with Joel as she gets older. In the game, as you point out, she goes from 14 to 19, I believe. But no, we are not doing House of the Dragon Leaps.”

However long or short those leaps are, it is expected that this series will also indulge in telling a more defined story. It would expand the world of the sequel, and it would tell fans those stories that have remained untold as of yet. He also mentioned that there would not be any recastings and Bella Ramsey would remain Ellie.
