It would not be an overstatement to call MrBeast one of the most prominent creators YouTube has ever seen. Jimmy ‘MrBeast’ Donaldson has genuinely done it all. From delivering some of the most ludicrous stunts the red platform has ever seen to hosting his own version of Squid Game. He even topped Forbes’ list of highest-paid YouTube stars of 2021.

These feats would lead fans to believe Jimmy always planned to pursue YouTube. However, MrBeast once had a successful stint with baseball.

Before his meteoric rise on YouTube, Donaldson was a high school student in North Carolina. During his tenure at Greenville Christian Academy in Greenville, he played both baseball and basketball with great fervour. In a CuriosityStream documentary titled ‘Beyond the Spotlight’, the YouTuber gives fans a peek into his early life.

MaxPreps paints an intriguing picture of young Jimmy playing as an Outfielder. According to them, in the 70 games he played, the future YouTube sensation scored 81 Hits, 65 RBIs with a batting average of.424 and an OBP of 511. An impressive score, but sadly, not impressive enough.

Donaldson was no slouch on the field. However, following his senior year, MaxPreps‘ ranking places him as the 212th best player in his state of North Carolina and the 6,107th best player in the country. A formidable showing, but pales compared to the feats of those in the big leagues. Although it’s important to note there is no way of measuring how much Jimmy could have improved had he gone to college and worked on his skills.

Why did MrBeast choose YouTube over Baseball?

When Jimmy was 15 years old, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease, severely hampering MrBeast’s ability to continue the sport. Jimmy notes.

“If I eat something it would go right through me.”

Severe weight loss and reduction in energy accompanied Jimmy’s condition. Jimmy’s weight loss was so drastic that he went from 180 pounds to 139 pounds, which was his lowest.

“Playing baseball was pure torture,” he said. “I probably would have tried to play baseball in college, but because of Crohn’s it definitely changed the trajectory…”

Due to the severity of his condition and Jimmy’s failing health, he invested all his time into YouTube, gradually building the behemoth brand you see in front of you today.

At 6 foot 3, Jimmy was a force to reckoned with. He topped out as a junior posting 5.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. His best season saw him stealing 23 bases in 25 attempts.
