Lewis Hamilton helped Mercedes with his ex-teammate Valtteri Bottas attain their eighth constructors’ championship. Even though Lewis narrowly missed out on his eighth personal accolade, Mercedes set a new standard with their successful run. However, this still wasn’t enough for the voters at Laureus. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team was not deemed worthy of the Team of the year award.

Mercedes is good but not the best!

Mercedes has been on a powerful run for quite some time now. Ever since 2014, there has been only one winner in the constructors’ championship. And the Brackley-based team now has eight consecutive constructors’ championship titles. No team has ever come close to this run during the turbo-hybrid era. But that wasn’t enough for the Silver Arrows to win the Laureus Team of the Year award.

The Italian Men’s Football National team, who won the UEFA Euro 2020, beat Mercedes to the award. The incredible run saw the Italians lift the UEFA Euro 2020 trophy. And the same feat kept the silver arrows from winning the team of the year title ahead of them. However, the F1 giants, who won the very award in 2018, could’ve solidified their stance only if they could’ve broken one more record during the 2021 season. One record that eluded them and their star driver, Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton is the only constant

During the incredible run in the turbo-hybrid era, Mercedes saw a couple of changes. Those changes came only as drivers; the team principal, Toto Wolff, still stands at the helm.

Lewis Hamilton has been the only constant during the entire run for the last eight years. Lewis and Nico Rosberg for the first three years and Lewis and Bottas for the last five. Now with George Russell, Lewis still remains the only constant, such is the faith in the seven-time world champion.

Mercedes is in an incredibly poor form at the moment. And they need to make quick and relevant changes to their cars. Especially with Lewis’s car, he is putting up one poor performance after the other.

Although it is a frustrating situation for the team and drivers alike, it’s only the start of the season. But Mercedes needs to make swift changes as they have a lot of catching up!
