Carlos Sainz proved his mettle at Ferrari in his very first season with the team in 2021. While the team wasn’t as competitive as they are now, he held his ground and beat Charles Leclerc by 5.5 points, securing two places above the Monegasque in the standings. However, 2022 was a completely different story, as Leclerc won the hearts of Tifosi and Sainz struggled to adapt to the car. The Spaniard is now keen to turn his fate around as the new season is about to begin.

Both Leclerc and Sainz had some forgettable outings throughout 2022. The car faced some reliability issues, resulting in a number of DNFs. However, Carlos’ luck was perhaps a bit more on a downward trend, as he had some unlucky crashes as well. Resultantly, the British GP winner DNF’d a whopping 6 times. After the conclusion of the season, he explained how dissatisfied he was with his campaign. Now he believes he could change in 2023 as the team knows where to improve.

Motorsport recently quoted him as saying, “What can I do? What can the team and driver do to become the very best? Going into the winter I wanted to work on this. I think I can give the best this year. Regardless of what happens, I have this more confidence this year anyway. I feel I can do more and I’m better prepared. I know what it’s like to fight at the front and what I have to do. I’m ready.” [Translated using Google]

“It is very clear where steps need to be taken. In that respect, it was a fairly smooth winter. Now it is important to implement the plans.”

Carlos had a similar season in 2015 when he drove for Toro Rosso alongside Max Verstappen. However, he rated the recently concluded campaign as the most demanding.

Like the rest of us, F1 drivers too have good days and bad days. On a good day when the mindset is right, one becomes unstoppable. Those are the kind of days Sainz wants to have more of.

In an October interview with Motorsport, he said, “What I’m going to say is probably a bit of a cliche, but I’ve always believed that I have the qualities necessary to win a race.”
