The American team is set to replace Schumacher with Nico Hulkenberg for 2023. As Guenther Steiner and Haas decided on the young German’s future, Toto Wolff believes they were a bit harsh.

In a recent interview with Sky Germany, the Mercedes AMG F1 boss conveyed, “Guenther is just Guenther. That’s how he will always speak and manage drivers. He comes from the mountains where the air is very thin and you can’t have clear thoughts.” [Translated from German].

Wolff, who recently claimed that the Schumacher family belongs to Mercedes, in light of the rumors of Mick joining them as their Reserve driver, took the cheeky dig at his fellow team boss during the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Steiner, the F1 veteran who comes from Merano, the Alpine town region in Italy, had an active role to play in Schumacher’s dismissal. The Haas team principal took the decision along with the team after two years of racing with Michael Schumacher’s son.

In his two years stint with the American team, Mick Schumacher claimed 12 points in 44 race entries he had in 2021 and 2022. Earlier this season, his last year’s teammate Nikita Mazepin was ousted from the team. Haas will start the 2023 F1 season with Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg in their line-up.

What did Guenther Steiner say about Mick Schumacher’s dismissal?

Guenther Steiner, the team principal of the Haas F1 team, laid out his reason for axing Mick Schumacher. Emphasizing the experience factor, Steiner primarily weighed his decision on Hulkenberg.

As per Planet F1, Steiner stated, “I think that the experience of multi-years in Formula 1 that never have been with another team than us [for Mick Schumacher], So by Nico being seen [as a driver with] three or four teams before.”

Experience [is key] and experience takes time to make, and in the moment, we don’t have time, because we want to move forward,” further asserted the Italian.

“We don’t want to be where we are. Now, we want to get better,” concluded the former managing director of Jaguar Racing.

Steiner perhaps is banking on experience as Magnussen proved to be a world-class driver in a Haas car this season. Despite having the same car, the Danish international scored more than twice the points compared to Mick Schumacher.
