Nelson Piquet’s controversial persona is finally catching up to him. In the past, the 3x champion has been a polarizing figure. However, as soon as he directed his attention toward 7x champion Lewis Hamilton, everything started spiraling for him. Piquet has been facing judicial scrutiny ever since he made racially fueled comments against the 38-year-old. Now, a last-ditch attempt at evading his fate has also come undone.

Back in March, the Brazilian racing ace was caught in a steep financial mess when according to O Globo reporter, Ancelmo Gois Piquet became a target, “of a public civil action filed by entities and social organizations, cases of Educafro and the National LGBTI+ Alliance, which asked for compensation of R$10 million [$1.9 million] as a form of reparation for collective moral damages.” And recent reports suggest he has to add another 7 figures to his fate.

The Brazilian judiciary didn’t take the insults thrown towards their ‘adopted’ son too kindly. He was convicted and subsequently ordered to pay a fine of R$5 million, which roughly translates to $1,000,000. Piquet then went on to appeal that fine.

That too seems to have come undone. According to reports, “Nelson Piquet has his last appeal denied and will officially have to pay R$ 5 million (around 1 million dollars) to funds to promote racial equality and against discrimination for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

“The former pilot, sentenced for racist and homophobic offenses to Lewis Hamilton, appealed the decision, but had it DENIED by the Court of Justice of the Federal District (TJ-DF) in Brazil.”

The only solace anyone can actually derive from this is that Piquet probably won’t repeat his sins ever again.

The entire backlash that has followed since Piquet made those comments has had an impact on him. Even though he will be ruing the day he made them, he still has to bear the hefty fine. That being said, he did try to contain the fire by issuing an apology in the Brit’s way.

ESPN had quoted Piquet saying back in 2022, “I apologize wholeheartedly to anyone that was affected, including Lewis, who is an incredible driver, but the translation in some media that is now circulating on social media is not correct. Discrimination has no place in F1 or society and I am happy to clarify my thoughts in that respect.”
