Alex Albon got his second points finish of the season for Williams in Miami by finishing P9 as the chequered flag fell. Although Alex’s cause was helped by Alpine’s Fernando Alonso picking up two separate five-second penalties; the Thai driver reveals the Spaniard’s unfair play in a post-race interview with F1 journalist Tom Clarkson. 

“I think we got P9,” claimed the Thai driver. “During this conversation, Alonso’s being pinged for, apparently he got a five-second penalty for causing the collision with Gasly, then he cut the chicane twice, you know I finished the race 5.2 seconds behind him, so I was only 2 tenths to get P9 and he cut the chicane twice to pull that gap.”

With already a five-second penalty hanging over his head, Fernando tried to increase the gap to Alex Albon. In doing so, Alonso cut the chicane twice at Turn 14 on the last lap. That did not sit well with Alex, and as a result, Fernando was awarded another five-second penalty. This then promoted Albon to P9 from P10 and was a cause of celebration in the Williams garage.

Arriving at the Miami Grand Prix with a new red hairstyle, he quickly became the talk of the paddock. When Alex sported the red hair in Australia, he scored his and the team’s first points of the 2022 season. In Imola, they ended up outside the points. And hence it was clear that the red hair has now become a lucky charm.

“No upgrades are ever needed, you just need to dye your hair!” he added in an interview with Sky Sports F1.

Alex Albon also reflected back on his time out from F1 and how he has worked on some aspects in order to do a better job now. He feels happy in his new stint with Williams and that he has a lot of support from the team. 

“I feel a lot of support from the people close to me, we’re on the rise,” he said.

After a difficult 2020 season with Red Bull, it’s refreshing to see Alex Albon gain his mojo back, and hopefully, the team can continue this trajectory.
