Alfa Romeo Set to Dethrone Mercedes F1 as Third Fastest Amidst ‘Big Upgrade’ at Barcelona

The new 2022 season has started off quite brilliantly for Alfa Romeo. The Switzerland-based team has come up as one of the most feared mid-table teams and it seems like they’re going to stay that way for the next few months. With the Spanish Grand Prix coming up a week later, they might target Mercedes on their way to the top.
As F1 goes back to Europe up next, teams are expected to bring back huge upgrades. In Miami, teams didn’t put up massive upgrades as the track was very new and could’ve been risky to play with the parts. For example, reports say that Aston Martin might bring a ‘completely new’ car to Barcelona.

For Alfa Romeo, things look bright from here on. The Swiss team’s technical department under Jan Monchaux and team boss Frederic Vasseur believe that with “a big upgrade” the C42 can be made quicker.
This push might just allow them to fight with the Mercedes W13 and even beat them on pace.
How good are Alfa Romeo this season?
With Valtteri Bottas coming in, the Swiss F1 team expected that the new season is going to be a memorable one. Alfa Romeo roped in the ferocious Mercedes man at the start of the year, and his performance is talking for him. The Finn international picked up a brilliant 30 points after five races so far.

Alfa Romeo has been a decent force this season nevertheless. The C42 has decent pace to battle with the likes of Mercedes, McLaren, and Alpine this season. It’s needless to say that the Hinwil-based team has already overtaken Aston Martin, Williams, or Haas.

The Sauber-owned team has performed really well this season. The points they picked up so far this season are more than what they’ve picked up the entire 2021 season. What’s more interesting is that Alfa Romeo picked up more points in this year’s five races than their last 40 races altogether.

To give credit to their performance, one has to mention the Ferrari engines they use. The Italian manufacturers have drastically improved their performance in the last couple of seasons. As a result, teams like Alfa Romeo and Haas are getting benefitted. The points table at least depicts the same as the Swiss team is currently ahead of AlphaTauri and Alpine.
