Red Bull promoted Pierre Gasly from their junior team after Daniel Ricciardo left towards the end of 2019. However, the Frenchman failed to keep up with Max Verstappen’s speed and Red Bull’s expectations. Following a string of low performances, the team demoted him back to AlphaTauri.

However, the very next year in 2020, Gasly had his redemption. He claimed his first career win at the Italian Grand Prix. Franz Tost, AlphaTauri team boss explains whether the Frenchman will have another chance to advance.

“Believing does not mean knowing. That’s why I’m careful there. Pierre is definitely a super good driver. At the moment I’m just happy that it wasn’t taken away from us. We are very well positioned with our pairing,” explained the team boss.

Since his demotion from Red Bull, Gasly has displayed tremendous strength. After claiming a P2 position at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix and his first Formula 1 win at the team’s home race, Tost reckons Gasly has shown some star power.

“I reckon Pierre is one of the strongest drivers in F1 nowadays. Pierre’s good technical understanding allows him to get the best out of the car. Pierre has been with the team for some time now so he is familiar with all procedures and with our way of working,” said Tost.

The team is landing on the grid with Gasly and the young F2 sensation, Yuki Tsunoda. Tost believes the 20-year-old Japanese driver will also learn a lot from Gasly’s improvement and leadership position within the team.
