American Driver Logan Sargeant’s F1 Future in Jeopardy Despite Recent Advances In SL Points Hunt

Williams F1 team announced Nicholas Latifi’s replacement last week in the United States. The British team has Logan Sargeant in mind to replace the Canadian for 2023. However, things aren’t going in the direction both Williams and Sargeant would want.
To qualify for F1 and join the F1 driver roster, Sargeant will need to acquire an FIA Super license by the end of this season. Failing to do that, will see the American driver wait for further years to have his F1 dreams come to reality. Despite being in a comfortable F2 position in recent times, the point loss at Mexico might be a huge blow for the American in the future.

A recent report shows how Sargeant failed to earn a point during FP1. The report states, “There will be no extra Super Licence point for Logan Sargeant after FP1. He completed 22 laps during FP1, which equates to just over 96km. He needs to complete 100km in an FP1 session to earn a SL point.”
Sargeant will need to have 40 super license points to gain the FIA Super license at the end of the year. The statement further read, “A top 5 championship finish is however enough, even if he picks up penalties and no extra SL points from FP1s. Essentially a clean end to his season and extra FP1 points could’ve meant top seven.”
What led Williams to pick Logan Sargeant as a Nicholas Latifi replacement?
As the Williams F1 team decided to part ways with Nicholas Latifi after a three-year stint. And there are certain reasons why the British team decided the move. Firstly, the obvious one where Latifi could not deliver enough. Moreover, with Albon’s inclusion, the Canadian looked even more vulnerable.
What an honor it is to confirm that I will be joining @WilliamsRacing as part of their driver academy. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and the faith they’ve put in me. A massive thank you to @Infinity_ISM for all of their help. I can’t wait to get started. pic.twitter.com/DvyCOfDb9G

As the decision has already been made, certain factors make Sargeant the perfect replacement for Latifi. The current F2 driver is an American international, which, of course, might bring enough commercial success for the Grove-based team.
Secondly, the 21-year-old is pretty talented with his driving skills and has been an academy driver for Williams since 2019. The American driver is currently in P3 in F2 and looks pretty solid for a top-5 finish this season.
On this, Williams’ boss Jost Capito stated, “We didn’t pick Logan in the academy because he’s American, we picked him because of his success and his past in racing.”
