Sargeant has enjoyed a terrific rookie season in F2 and deservedly earned his place in F1. The unclarity of the contract situation of Nyck de Vries and Mick Schumacher might have helped his cause, but his stellar performances have forced people to take him seriously.

Talking to GQ, Sargeant was asked, “What made you want to pursue it back when you were a kid?”

To this, he replied, “Because it’s simply the pinnacle of motorsport. It’s where competitiveness is at its highest and where the best drivers in the world are. Any kid’s dream is to reach the top of whatever they’re doing, so I’d say that’s what attracted me to it.

Furthermore, he added, “I started watching Formula 1 back when Lewis [Hamilton] and Felipe Massa were battling for the championship in 2008. I’d wake up early to watch the races. Then I moved to Europe, so the races were finally on at a more normal time for me.”

Even though the 2008 season was not as nearly as controversial as 2021, the last race in Brazil did end up creating an uproar among the people. In the last corner of the last lap, Lewis Hamilton overtook Timo Glock to take P5 and snatch the championship from home hero Felipe Massa by 1 point.

Although he is an honorary Brazilian citizen now, Hamilton wasn’t always on such good terms with the Brazilian fans, especially after the 2008 Brazilian GP. Moreover, Timo Glock, who Hamilton passed to get his first title, had to be escorted by police to the airport as he had received a lot of hate mail.

Sargeant said, “I have prepared the best I can to be the best driver I can possibly be. Hopefully, I can represent them well and make them proud, but I don’t feel it’s any extra pressure.”

He further stated, “I feel like I’ve had a good three or four months of build-up knowing it’s a possibility. I don’t feel it’s too quick, I feel it’s about right and I am super-excited to get going.”

Sargeant also mentioned that the FP sessions with Williams have given him the confidence to get out of his comfort zone. Jost Capito, the Williams CEO, is also excited to work with the young prodigy.
