“Anything to Bring Alpine Down”: Fernando Alonso’s Shrewd Presence of Mind on Pierre Gasly’s Error Steals the Show as Fans Bring Up Conspiracy Theories

It isn’t just his driving in 2023 that Fernando Alonso is making headlines for lately. Whether it was the chaos in the final minutes of the Australian GP or the Q2 in Spain, the local boy is gaining quite the reputation of a steward. What makes things even spicier is the fact that this time around, it was Alpine at the receiving end.
In the final moments of the Australian GP, the race went through a restart after red flags. The restart saw carnage on the grid as drivers ran into each other while searching for an extra place. Pierre Gasly ran into his own teammate, Esteban Ocon, while Alonso’s fellow Spaniard, Carlos Sainz, hit him from behind, making him spin around. The Asturian driver quickly told his race engineer to refer to one of his previous races in Silverstone when a similar scenario took place and he was reinstated in his original place. The FIA took time but eventually ruled in Alonso’s favor. Looks like he is back in his stewarding duties.

Alonso’s exit from Alpine last year was far from an amicable scene. He had a falling out with his then-teammate Esteban Ocon and also openly criticized the team for the car’s shortcomings on the team radio.
That rivalry is set to make a comeback as he urged the FIA to give Gasly a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Max Verstappen on Turn 4. Alonso was just behind Verstappen and had a good look over what happened. Just moments before, Max too complained about Gasly impeding him. However, it is Alonso’s comment that is already going viral on the internet. Take a look at how fans reacted.
