F1 is in many ways a rich man’s sport. The insane amount of cash that needs to be forked out through the karting years and junior formulas is mind-boggling. For instance, a year competing in the biggest karting scenes can cost anywhere between $30,000-$50,000. Compared to his rivals on the grid, did George Russell get a boost while entering the circus?

Similarly, a season in ADAC or the Italian F4 can cost upwards of $200,000. So just making it through your junior years will make you shell out big bucks. Of course, not everyone can afford it, and hence most F1 drivers on the current grid hail from wealthy families.

However, sometimes even the financial demands cannot stop you from reaching the top level. A prime example of the same is the Mercedes driver, George Russell. The talented Britton, like his teammate and compatriot Lewis Hamilton, comes from humble beginnings. And like his teammate is touted to be a future world champion.

Russell’s parents, Steve and Alison Russell, are not one to bask in the limelight and generally shy away from the media. Hence not much is known about them. Steve Russell was a small-time business owner dealing in beans and peas. He used whatever cash he earned to help fund George’s karting career.

After multiple notable karting wins, Mercedes came in to help bankroll Russell’s junior formula career. The team played a massive role in Russell’s rise to the top.
