Although the new technical regulations will not kick off until next season, 2021 is still the dawn of a new era for a couple of F1 teams. They are Aston Martin and Alpine, respectively. Both going through a rebrand while also hiring noteworthy former world Champions- Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.

Aston Martin’s case is more unique since Renault have always had the financial resources to compete with. But the Lawrence Stroll-backed team now has the stability to match their ambition.

The German has been behind the cockpit of championship-caliber cars with Red Bull and Ferrari since the last decade. And he’s delivered the ultimate glory on 4 occasions, as well. So, he is someone who knows what it takes to win.

Hence, Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer is hoping that he transmits this energy throughout the whole organisation.

“It’s hugely exciting for everyone in the team. In Sebastian, we have a proven four-time World Champion with experience of helping teams become race-winning and championship-contending outfits.

“That’s why he is such an important signing for us. He brings a winning mentality and we will all undoubtedly learn a lot from him on this journey,” said Szafnauer on how he was looking forward to working with Vettel.

Vettel-Stroll an ideal pairing

However, this is not the only reason that Aston Martin hired Vettel. The rationale behind it is the very same behind the team’s current fortunes – Lance Stroll. His billionaire father wishes to see his son hold the World Championship trophy one day.

So, what do you do to speed up his progress as a driver? Pit him against a World Champion without the pressure of losing his race seat so he can improve his skills by learning from the best.

“We also think Sebastian will bring out the best in Lance, with Lance pushing Sebastian hard in return, so we’re delighted with our 2021 line-up. It’s the ideal blend of experience, race-winning knowhow, and raw talent,” said Otmar.

This is not a ‘time will tell’ or ‘we will find out’ type of signing. Having Vettel is a win-win situation for Aston Martin; it raises their profile on and off the track immensely. Goes to show why Stroll Sr. is among Canada’s richest businessman.
