Sergio Perez is one of the best drivers of this season. He sits at fourth place in the driver’s standings currently, with just three rounds to go. Also, he holds the bragging rights over his teammate.

However, as one must know in Formula 1, this doesn’t always offer a driver security of his seat. It is a sport influenced heavily by politics and finances. The Mexican, who himself partly relies on his financial backings, has fallen foul of that this time around.

Red Bull or nothing for Sergio Perez

Max Verstappen‘s partner Alex Albon is struggling at the moment, giving other drivers an opportunity to pounce at his seat. Perez is one name being tipped to replace him. Having driven an outstanding season in the most competitive car of his career, it’s no less than what he would settle for. Making himself very clear, he said –

“I’ve been here so many years, I want to keep going, I think I’m at the peak of my career,” he added.

“But I also want to keep going with a reason, with a plan, with a good project. So I think if there’s not a good project that keeps my motivation to give 100%, I’d rather not take it.”

The Racing point driver intends to take a sabbatical rather than drive at the back of the grid, if not given the nod by Red Bull.

“I think if I don’t have [a] Formula 1 [seat] next year, I don’t see myself doing anything else. I will take a year to consider what I want to do, [whether] I really miss it.

“So I have to see also the life out of the sport, how it is, how it suits me and then see if I miss it or I just want to carry on with that life.”

Perez added, “Most other drivers, they retire and after six months they go mad and they want to do whatever is available. So I have to see. I’ve never experienced that my whole life”

Perez or Hulkenberg – Who deserves the Red Bull seat more?

That’s a tough choice. While the Mexican driver has nine podiums to show for, the German has none. Unlike Nico, who is without a drive this year, he is making a more recent argument for himself. However, Hulkenberg is considered to be among the fastest drivers on the grid. He is quicker than Perez over one lap and is well-respected among his peers.

A tough choice indeed.

Who will don their racing suit next year – Perez or Hulkenberg? Well, let’s not totally count out Alex! The poor lad still has three races to salvage his seat. Let’s see if he can do that and put all the chatter to rest.
