Calling 2022 a troublesome year for Fernando Alonso would be an understatement, considering the sheer bad luck he has faced this season. The Spanish driver rarely had a good race when he could deliver to his fullest and cross the finish line. The recent Brazil GP sprint has also added to the woes Alonso has been facing all season.

Alonso started the sprint from P7, behind his teammate Esteban Ocon in P6. As they crossed turn 1 of Lap 4, that was the end of their points dream as Alonso tangled with his teammate Ocon, damaging his own front wing. “Yeah, it was very unfortunate today,” said Alonso at the post-sprint conference.

Talking about the unfortunate affair, the two-time world champion further stated, “It’s been like this all year. I remember in Jeddah, I nearly went into a wall, in Budapest at the start. Yeah, nothing to talk.”

When asked if he would talk to his teammate regarding this, the former McLaren driver conveyed, “No, I don’t think. You know we all try to defend as good as we can.”

“I feel bad for the guys [team crews] today but I will try to go on the race tomorrow and try to score points for the team,” concluded Alonso, as he prepares for the race on Sunday.

Esteban Ocon justified his move against Fernando Alonso

Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso’s teammate at Alpine, however, justified his move against his teammate, saying that he was in his line and he had to defend. As per him, he did the right thing.

Talking about this, the Frenchman stated during the post-sprint press conference, “I had a good launch, I was trying to attack the McLarens in front. I took my corner. Alonso was unfortunately on the outside, coming from low end.”

When asked if he made contact with his teammates’ Alpine, Ocon stated, “No, no contact on either side.” However, video footage showed that Alonso had indeed touched Ocon’s car during the tussle as he went off the track and damaged his tires and front wing.

In order to get them fixed, the Spaniard had to pit, losing some valuable points as a result. In the end, Alonso finished the sprint in P15, while Ocon crossed the line in P18.
