It has been a dominating season by Mercedes, yet again. And it has been so, since the onset of the V6 hybrid engine era in 2014. The team is on course for another Constructors’ Championship, while Lewis Hamilton is on track for another Drivers’ title.
And it is safe to say that the other teams and drivers are clearly frustrated, doing more chasing than challenging. Carlos Sainz has stated that ‘even Mercedes has realized by now, that a Grand Prix is more exciting without them’!
Speaking in an interview, he was quoted saying, “Of course there is frustration. But the way F1 works today, is that the team with the most money will always win.
I don’t want to take any credit from them, because the way Mercedes is exploiting its full potential right now is spectacular. I think we could have a much more spectacular F1, and I think even Mercedes has realised how exciting a Grand Prix was without them.
“Honestly, behind the Mercedes, our races are always like that.”
Carlos Sainz keen to continue pushing
The McLaren driver was a podium finisher at Monza, securing P2 in the race. It was the first time in 8 races this season, that had neither a Mercedes nor Red Bull driver on the podium.
Driving spectacularly to push Gasly until the end, the determination in Sainz’s eyes was palpable. It is this excitement and passion that somewhere strikes a chord with every Formula 1 fan. No one wants to watch a sport that a handful of drivers dominate.
Although Sainz would be trying his best, it would be tough to see how he challenges Mercedes. The prospect of Carlos Sainz causing the Silver Arrows any kind of trouble behind the wheel of a scarlet drive of Ferrari seems unlikely as well.
Nonetheless, a fresh pairing of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be interesting to watch.
Meanwhile, Mercedes’ dominance is set to continue. Having confirmed Valtteri Bottas for next season, Hamilton’s renewal is widely expected. The pair together have won 7 of the 9 races this season so far.
With their engine operating at its peak, the rest of the pack can only hope for more luck and incidents to avoid further frustration.
