As drivers endure an extended ‘winter break’ due to the Coronavirus, Mattia Binotto revealed what his drivers were up to in the time off. The Ferrari team principal gave an update on Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel. Binotto also gave his thoughts on the events that transpired down under during the Australian Grand Prix.

F1’s handling of the Australian Grand Prix was a gigantic mess. It raised a lot of questions on F1’s priority, planning and preparedness. The company’s delayed response to cancelling the event drew fans ire. However, it became apparent that the ultimate decision to not go racing boiled down to teams’ preferences.

Reports suggested that all 10 teams voted in favour or against holding a race weekend in Australia. Ferrari firmly voted against and it soon became clear that the Scuderia had no intention of racing.

Recently, Romain Grosjean revealed that he received a text from Vettel stating that he would not race. Additionally, Vettel was one of the first drivers to leave the country before F1 announced its official decision.

Binotto gave his take on the confusion that ensued. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Binotto said:

“The night before the Australian GP was characterized by many discussions, our decision was not to participate: Ferrari would not have raced in any case. Health is paramount.”

What are Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc up to?

When asked if he was in touch with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, Binotto replied affirmatively. The Italian revealed that he was conversations with the duo on a daily basis.

I hear (from) the pilots almost daily, we talk on the phone and see each other through video calls, Vettel and Leclerc keep in shape at home, they train constantly “

Despite the period of no racing, F1 drivers don’t have the liberty of kicking back and breaking free from their training regime. Drivers train to a great degree to get in shape for the season. However, the extended break only means a period of harder training to stay fit when the eventual season does get underway.

The F1 season is yet to begin but after cancelling yet another race, Canada will host the season opener.
