Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes are said to be a match made in heaven. No one would have imagined the driver coming in from McLaren to replace Michael Schumacher in a not-so-fast Mercedes would go on to win the drivers’ championship a record total of seven times. However, it was the collaborative effort of engineers and other staff working from Brackley that enabled this, as well as eight consecutive constructors’ championships. However, three-time drivers’ championship winner Sir Jackie Stewart does not seem too impressed with it, given Mercedes, the German team’s affiliation.

The former star driver, while giving credit to Hamilton for his success, bats for British technology and hails it as the “capital of technology for motorsport.” The driver also expressed his desire to see young drivers, namely George Russell and Lando Norris, take up Hamilton’s place, calling the pack of three Britons the best in the world!

As per Express.co.uk, Stewart said, “There’s a wonderful collection of people right now. We’ve got now in Britain three of the best racing drivers in the world. You’ve got Lewis who’s been winning time after time after time with the unfortunately German car company.

“But that German car company gets all their Formula One cars built in [Brackley] because Britain is the capital of technology for motorsport. Our young British racing drivers today, I’d love one to win the world championship this season. That would be fantastic.”

Well, we are not sure how a championship for George Russell would mean any different from those of Lewis Hamilton. However, Lando Norris’s title with McLaren would surely please the veteran.

Is British bias favoring Lewis Hamilton in F1?

The term “British bias” came up when several fans pointed out biased commentary, reporting, and manipulation by British reporters. This is said to be partially caused by the fact that the coverage broadcasted around the world comes from Sky Sports itself.

The idea of British bias has not only been pointed out by the fans but also by drivers on the grid. Earlier, Max Verstappen boycotted Sky Sports in 2022, which wasn’t well received by British fans.

On the other hand, Fernando Alonso was outspoken about it and backed Verstappen after the infamous 2021 Silverstone accident. As quoted by Motorsport.com, he said, “Always what I felt when I was racing, it seemed like I was the bad guy in Formula 1 when I was trying to fight against normally British guys. When I saw the Silverstone thing, when I see what Verstappen gets with some questions etc, I understand his position for sure.”

Whether British bias exists can be debated. It is a topic of subjectivity. But one can be sure that the rules and regulations of the competition remain impartial and carry no bias.
