Max Verstappen continues to keep winning races and extending his lead in the Drivers’ championship. And historically, his teammates at Red Bull have looked like amateurs compared to him. Because of such a difference, the second drivers always face the wrath of fans, analysts, and RB management. And according to a former Red Bull driver, Sergio Perez is Verstappen’s 4th victim.

Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, and now, Sergio Perez – the Dutchman has cracked 4 drivers with his pristine control over the Red Bull car. The Belgian GP was a very good example of how easily Verstappen can overtake Perez. In the latest episode of the Sky Sports F1 podcast, former RB test driver, Karun Chandhok spoke about how Verstappen has “broken” Perez.

Chandhok said, “The only other thing (apart from the trophy) appeared to have broken is their second driver in some ways.” The Sky Sports expert cited how in Baku a few months ago, Checo seemed to match & beat Max consistently. Although, since then, things have gone south for him badly. He further added, “Ever since he got overtaken in Lap 41 in Miami, it’s gone away from him.”

“On the weekend at Spa, Max got ahead of him and he put 22 seconds on him in 27 laps. That’s a big chunk of performance to put around a track where they’re spending a lot of time full-throttle driving in a straight line. And to me, that is the only cause of concern at the moment in the Red Bull camp. This is the 4th teammate that he’s (Max) potentially broken.

He might appear broken but has not lost his sportsman spirit. He’s played the role of a good teammate and has also praised Verstappen for his sublime first half of the 2023 season.

Red Bull has won 12 out of 12 races in 2023. And the reigning World Champion has won 10 out of those 12, with 8 consecutive wins in the last 8 races. On the other hand, his Mexican teammate has won the other 2 but that was at the beginning of the season. Perez might be dejected with his performance but is happy for his teammate who’s ruling the grid.

Perez said, “There’s nothing to be taken away from Max, certainly. He did a tremendous race, and he’s done a tremendous season. He’s very talented, around his team they’re getting the maximum out of the weekends, weekend after weekend, which is really impressive.”

Despite contrasting performances from their 2 drivers, Red Bull looks set to win both championships. Perez might be playing second fiddle to Verstappen but if he continues to be on the podium alongside him, he will have played a big role in getting the Constructors’ championship to the Milton-Keynes outfit.
