The 2020 F1 season was one with many interesting talking points. There were some incredible feats achieved by Sir Lewis Hamilton, along with surprise Grand Prix winners and an exciting mid-field battle. However, the back end of the campaign was marred by the horror crash of Romain Grosjean, at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Every fan F1 around the world had their hearts in their mouths when they saw Romain’s Haas go up in flames. For what seemed like an eternity, there was no sign of Grosjean emerging from the wreckage. Then, in a spectacle nothing short of the greatest miracle, the Frenchman came out of the flames; and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

The medical staff were rightly hailed as heroes. However, Grosjean himself deserves immense credit for staying calm and keeping his mind focused on what he had to do to survive. Former F1 world champion, Jenson Button, shed some insight on this point.

Button said, “In that impact, which was 53G, I believe it was, normally you are knocked out and unconscious. He wasn’t. If he was unconscious then he would not have got out.”

The former McLaren driver was most impressed in the particular way Grosjean got out of his burning Haas. He said, “He’s in the car, he’s stuck, he can’t get his head out, and he works out he can get out via the side of the Halo.

“Nobody has ever tried to get out of the side of the Halo. That has never been a test that we do in a racing car. You get out of the top and they time you to see if you can do it within a certain time.

“And yet he got out from the side. This space is so small that a human being should not be able to get out of there.”

Yet, Grosjean did the impossible and crawled out of the side of the halo. It goes to show the presence of mind Romain had, despite all the carnage around him. It may not have been the way he’d have wanted to end his F1 career. But he bows out as a hero who gained the respect of the whole world.
