In 2021, for the first time in a long time, Lewis Hamilton was challenged for the entire season by another driver. Max Verstappen did what nobody else did since 2016 – he beat Lewis Hamilton, came out on top, and took away a fifth-consecutive world championship from the seven-time champion.

This led to many wondering if Verstappen is ‘the kind of driver’ that can defeat Hamilton. And it’s fair only considering the last driver to do so was Nico Rosberg and he too was aggressive and not afraid to be the ‘bad guy’ against his teammate.

And speaking of teammates, it should also be mentioned that in 2022, Hamilton won’t only be fighting against Verstappen but his own teammate, the rising star George Russell.

So the question now is, does Russell have the personality to defeat Hamilton?

Maybe he has, and maybe he doesn’t.

But it’s not really important, according to someone who has seen the young Briton grow into the promising driver he is today.

Russell doesn’t need to be like Verstappen to beat Lewis Hamilton – Williams boss

Jost Capito, Williams’ CEO, recently described how his former driver is in terms of personality compared to the Red Bull driver. He explained how Russell has a “completely different character,” than Verstappen.

And that’s okay, if Capito is to believed.

“In Formula 1, you don’t need the same character to be fast.”

While fans of the 37-year-old will expect him to bounce back from the defeat of the past season, Hamilton will no longer be fighting with Verstappen only.

There could be another rivalry inside his own garage in the form of George Russell, who will look to make the most of his first season at the top team.
