A burning question that drives the whole Formula 1 community is whether Lewis Hamilton will return in 2022 or not. Williams F1 Team Principal Jost Capito recently made an honest admission on this issue. Capito bluntly said that Hamilton’s decision to go either way doesn’t matter to him. However, he wants the Mercedes star to return for George Russell.

Russell joined the Brackley team ahead of the 2022 season. He recently made his first visit to the team factory in Brackley as a Mercedes driver. The young Brit owes much of his growth in F1 to his former team Williams. He made his debut with the Wantage-based team in the 2019 Australian GP. Now, three seasons later, the former Mercedes junior driver is all set to compete with the front-running team.

Capito has been all praises for the young gun for his performances with the team; he famously called him “already a polished diamond” in an interview last month.

Capito wants George Russell to win against Lewis Hamilton

Capito is of the opinion that Lewis Hamilton has had his share of success in the sport and should vacate the seat f0r a youngster. But at the same time, Russell’s former boss is rooting for him. He wants Sir Lewis to stay in F1 so that George Russell gets an opportunity to fight against him.

In a recent interview with RTL, Capito said that Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes would be unfortunate for George Russell. “From my point of view, Hamilton should continue, otherwise it would be bad for George because then he wouldn’t be able to beat him and I think he would like to beat him. I would treat George to that,” said the German.

” (Russell is) a bit away from the potential he can have, he can certainly develop and improve again at Mercedes,” added Capito.
