Ahead of the French GP, there was a bounce in the step of all the men wearing red in the paddock. Charles Leclerc won the Austria GP, and it looked like he had rediscovered himself in the 2022 season. However, his ambitions to fight back in the championship came crashing down as he found himself in the wall at turn 11 of the Paul Ricard circuit.

From the get-go this season, the Monegasque announced himself as a championship protagonist by grabbing 2 wins in the first 3 races. Following that, a driver error, a strategy error, or the reliability of the F1-75 has held him back in his quest to claim the world title. It was indeed a short-lived fairytale.

On the other side of the garage, his teammate has delivered signs of being a future leader. Be it Ferrari’s Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, or even Plan E, Sainz backs himself in selecting the strategy that will get him the silverware. Notably, all the decisions have come while driving the fastest piece of racing machinery on the globe.

On the back of this, former world champion Damon Hill couldn’t resist from commenting on the smooth operator in F1. He criticized Leclerc for making multiple mistakes and called the Spaniard to be promoted to the number 1 driver in the Italian camp.

He said, “Carlos has struck me as actually more of the team leader. He seems to be more familiar with the strategy. He seems to be able to make decisions.”

“Charles is clearly quick and possibly quicker than Carlos has been in the team, but you know their pit communications. They’re a little bit halfway up the stairs, do you know what I mean?”

Are the title aspirations over for Charles Leclerc?

It is not the first time this season that the Ferrari golden boy has lost invaluable championship points. Earlier in the season at the Imola GP, another driver error cost him 7 championship points. He was sizing up a move on Sergio Perez for P3, but could not control the F1-75 and ended up touching the barriers.

At the moment, consistency is the key for the 24-year-old to leave a mark in the championship. His championship rival, Max Verstappen, is in exceptional form and raises the bar at each Grand Prix with stellar results. The defending world champion looks hard to beat, but Leclerc has raced him since their karting days and knows his way around a duel with the Dutchman.

Even Damon Hill acknowledged it is not all over. He said, “The potential is huge with Ferrari. And I think if they can fix these problems, they really will be a threat. If they can do that between now and the end of the season, it could be a very close finish in the championship.”
