F1 News: Carlos Sainz Publicly Bashes F1’s Sprint Rules: “Did Not Make Any Sense”

Formula 1’s relationship with drivers and teams has been up and down over the years. But it’s safe to assume FIA is like the angry teacher, and the teams and drivers act like the over-smart students every now and then. However, a driver coming out and bashing the governing authority is not really a frequent occurrence, but Carlos Sainz has now come out to voice his opinion.

During the presentation of the Ferrari SF-24 in the interview session with the press, apart from highlighting the work done by the team on the car, Sainz criticized the FIA urging them to give the drivers and teams to be given more “chance”.

To be more specific, the Spaniard has a problem with F1’s Sprint formats Parc Fermé rules. So before we get into what he said, let’s briefly look at what these rules are. As per the current regulations, the teams are not allowed to make any changes to their cars after FP1.

And this acts as a perfect segue into what Sainz actually told formu1a.uno, “Last year, when the car went into parc fermé immediately after the FP1 and nothing could be changed, it meant staying on the defensive for the rest of the weekend, which for me did not make any sense. I think a driver and a team should always have a chance to try to change things on the car if something doesn’t work as planned.”

Is it time to relax the Parc Fermé rules?

This was the exact title of a 2-month-old Reddit post from user PeteUKinUSA that triggered a whole debate around the supposedly harsh rules. There are multiple schools of thought on this matter, but there seems to be a sizeable fleet of fans who do not echo Ferrari‘s only race-winner.

“You realise if you get rid of parc ferme then mechanics will have work hard to change the car every weekend right? and then there’s no tactical dynamic and it rewards teams with more resources who can build qualifying cars and race cars effectively.”

“It’s pointless to get rid of it.”, one fan proclaimed. Another fan added to this comment, speaking for the mechanics by revealing, “mechanics will be overworked too.”

However, another fan seemed to echo with Carlos Sainz, “Generally, no. It’s to stop teams from bringing a qualifying configuration, then swapping everything up for the race config.”

Another fan said, “However, something should be figured out for sprint weekends, as they have to lock in their config for the whole weekend after one practice session. It’s not fun or exciting when a team can’t change anything for two quali’s and race sessions. And with the current red flag rules, it’s very easy to lose a lot of that first practice.”
