Max Verstappen is almost making it a habit to win in 2023. The Dutchman has won six of the first eight races of the season. This feat can only be achieved with incredible consistency and near-perfection driving week in and week out. The Red Bull champ is achieving these high levels almost every race weekend in 2023. However, even the best need humbling down from time to time and the Canadian GP produced this moment for Verstappen. Red Bull’s advisor Helmut Marko used this incident to snap his star pupil into reality.

Red Bull’s fairytale of securing their 100th race win at home turf almost became a reality in Canada, not that it’s what they would’ve wanted. During the race on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the Dutchman was comfortably leading throughout but had a lapse of concentration. This could’ve been a costly error, but Verstappen was able to avoid any damage. Soon after avoiding the barriers eventually ended Goerge Russell’s race, Verstappen even notified his team with a chuckle at the end. Perhaps this is the c*ckiness Marko mentioned in his comments.

Regardless, this was a rare oversight and lapse of concentration from Verstappen’s end. Another incident with a bird, which did not end well for the bird, also could’ve hampered his race. So despite the win, all these scenarios, among a few others, made for not the best race according to Verstappen.

“Today wasn’t our best race,” says Verstappen. “It was pretty difficult today to keep the tires in the right window. They were always pretty cold. We had to push pretty hard.” Despite the superiority, the Dutchman wasn’t oblivious to the fact, the RB19 was perhaps not the best car on the grid. In fact, he believes Ferrari was faster than them on both sets of tires during the race.

However, we doubt Verstappen will have this feeling come to the race in Austria. Despite the track-specific limitations, he managed to squeeze out a win. We are sure when the conditions are favorable, he will be back to a 20-second gap leading from the front.
