The American incursion into the sport may have cost Charles Leclerc the race win at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Monegasque painfully retired his Ferrari F1-75 in the 27th lap of the race. With a clear and comfortable 12-second lead after a pit stop, Leclerc lost power in his car. To no fault of his own, the Ferrari man lost out. And American-Canadian singer Drake might have something to do with it.

Drake is known to put large wagers on sporting events. But he is also infamous for bringing bad luck to the entity he favors. The hip-hop artist bet a massive $230,000 in favor of Leclerc winning the Spanish Grand Prix. Now, Leclerc is caught in the crossfire of the sport’s popularity surge in America.

Drake shared a screenshot of the bet on his Instagram. A Leclerc win, which looked likely, would’ve fetched the Canadian rapper a massive $750,000. And this was Drake’s first Formula 1 bet as he captioned the story, “First F1 bet let’s see how this goes.” But it wasn’t meant to be, as the Drake curse struck again!

Similarly, earlier in May, Drake lost about $432,000 by betting it on American mixed martial artist Justin Gaethje to become UFC lightweight champion at UFC 274, which clearly did not happen.

Leclerc started the race incredibly by defending his position at the start. He only seemed to pull away throughout his race. The Ferrari man amassed a massive 29-second gap from the runner-up Russell. But the unexpected engine failure put an end to Leclerc’s outstanding race. A painful proposition for Ferrari and the driver alike.

To rub salt to his wounds, Max Verstappen won the race and overtook Leclerc in the championship table. Moreover, a 1-2 finish for Red Bull meant they overtook Ferrari in the constructors’ points table as well.

The home race curse is the next challenge for Charles Leclerc

The tale of the curse might continue next weekend as well, with the traveling circus heading to Monaco. Leclerc has not finished a single race at his home Grand Prix in his entire F1 career.

However, Leclerc might hope he has already paid the piper in Monaco this season. The Monegasque crashed Niki Lauda’s Ferrari in the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. And now with the Monaco Grand Prix around the corner, Leclerc will hope for an incident-free race.

The unforced race retirement from the lead has hurt the Scuderia camp. And with the Red Bull camp taking the lead on both fronts, Ferrari will want a comeback at Monaco.
