Red Bull have confirmed that Sergio Perez will continue to drive for them in the 2022 season. The decision to continue was a bit of a surprise, as some thought that the Austrian team might consider giving another chance to Pierre Gasly. While that didn’t turn out to be true, team principal Christian Horner has revealed that the Frenchman is still a part of their plans.

The AlphaTauri driver had a tough time on his first outing at the Red Bull team in 2019. They dropped him midway through the season as his performances were way behind teammate Max Verstappen.

I would never rule it out: Christian Horner

As reported by Formula Passion, the Red Bull team boss mentioned that the performances of the Frenchman have impressed him at AlphaTauri. He also stated that despite not offering him the driver at the big team, he will not rule out a move in the future.

“He‘s driving very well, he’s young, and he’s doing a great job. For 2023 (the year in which Perez’s contract will expire) we are evaluating various options.

Red Bull team boss gives an update on the young prospects of the academy

Red Bull have nurtured many drivers such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, and Max Verstappen. They have gone on to become race winners in their own rights.

Horner mentioned that the Red Bull Young Driver academy is currently filled with talented drivers in junior formula categories.

“We have Liam Lawson and Juri Vips in Formula 2, without forgetting Dennis Haugher in Formula 3 and an interesting American like Jack Crawford. We have a very good junior program,” said Christian.

Pierre Gasly has picked up two podiums since his return to AlphaTauri from Red Bull. He had put in consistent performances for the Italian team and even won a race with them last season.
