The black beauty is back. Mercedes pulled the covers to reveal their 2023 challenger, W14, on the 15th of February. After leaving the Formula 1 world in happy tears, the team was quick to pass on that emotional baton to their drivers. Following in Ferrari’s footsteps, Mercedes wasted no time in taking their championship-hopeful beast to the iconic Silverstone Circuit for a few laps. Lewis Hamilton was vocal about his excitement after ‘playing’ with his new toy.

For the run, the Silver Arrows’ drivers drove around the circuit and were left ecstatic. The damp conditions at the track couldn’t dampen the spirit of the drivers who endured it all last season after publicly struggling with the W13 and its porpoising issues. Mercedes used one of their two permitted filming days to warm up the spirits and their car before the pre-season testing in Bahrain next week. The track time left the seven-time champion, Hamilton, as ecstatic as a kid on Christmas who has been given a present he has always wanted.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Lewis Hamilton said, “It’s one of the most exciting periods of time. I mean, especially to the outcome Silverstone in February and have the Sun is up, you know, more often across the point it’s gonna be raining and gray at this period of time in the year so to have a clear sky day.”

He further added, “We’ve got a great team of people who’ve worked so hard to make today possible. And we have a new car. It’s uh, it’s like the most exciting part. It’s like Christmas for us two drivers because we basically get to go and use our new toy. And see what it’s like, hoping that all the work really pays off in how we feel.”

Shedding more light on the machine developed by Brackley outfit, the Briton spoke about the Silver Arrows going back to their iconic black.

It is no secret that the 2022 campaign was the worst endured by the 8x champion team. While they have gone all black, playing the smart move of shedding the paint to in turn shed the weight, Hamilton understands that the sacrifice will help them gain performance.

Hamilton said, “I love the black. I love the black before I preferred it to Livery last year particularly and but last year we were heavy all year long we’re just carrying extra weight and baggage that’s really held us back so the focus this year is sacrifice the look for example for performance.”
