Oscar Piastri’s rookie season has earned him well-deserved praise for his remarkable maturity on the track, highlighted by his impressive back-to-back top-five finishes in recent races. The Melbourne-born McLaren driver showcased his talent with a fifth-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, coming just two weeks after securing a fourth place at the British Grand Prix.

After an impressive performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Piastri demonstrated remarkable composure and held the second position for the first 18 laps, McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, praised the 22-year-old driver. However, as the race progressed, he encountered difficulties with tire degradation, leading to a fifth-place finish.

Despite this setback, Piastri’s determination was evident in a pivotal moment during the race when he radioed the team. He expressed his eagerness to push harder and potentially overtake Lando Norris, but at the same time, he showed a willingness to adhere to the team’s strategy and conserve if necessary. As described by F1 expert and ex-Ferrari Manager, Peter Windsor, “There was actually a situation earlier, I think it was in the second, as well, just after his second set of tires. Oscar got on the radio, I love that laconic way he says, he said, what do you want me to do now? It was just like, um, I think I can go a bit quicker, and I, you know, I can get Lando if you need me to, but equally, I’ll just cruise around if that’s what you want me to do. And, um, I think that was his very laconic way of saying, I could go quicker than this, but anyway, I hear what you guys are saying.”

According to an article by Autosport.com, McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, explained that the decision to pit Norris first was to prevent him from being undercut by Lewis Hamilton. Despite the strategic call, Piastri’s pace declined significantly in the latter part of the race due to floor damage, which affected his rear downforce and tire degradation. The team believes the damage may have been caused when Piastri ran over a kerb during the race.
