The tale of Fernando Alonso’s comeback and resurgence to the top of the grid will be told for ages. The driver this time made a great career move, contradictory to popular opinion. He has become the talk of the season despite only finishing P3 in two consecutive races when put in contrast with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez’s reign of terror on the grid.

However, Fernando’s rise to the podium could become an area of contention within the Aston Martin camp, as the Spaniard might be going head-to-head against his boss and team owner, Lawrence Stroll. Though it just appears to be a far stretch, the real possibility of it happening can’t be denied, as the senior Stroll would be looking for better results for his son, Lance Stroll. A perfect start to the season can thus take an entirely different route behind the scenes.

The theory itself points to a possible civil war in the team, as both Lawrence and Fernando have unforgiving and unapologetic personalities. Speaking about it, a popular reporter and a known name on the paddock, Peter Windsor, in his video said, “At the end, with all the Aston Martin mechanics in green in front of the podium and Fernando being Mr Charm, Mr Charisma with the fluorescent green Aston Martin cap and smile and just looking a hundred million dollars, you had to think, ‘not sure Stroll Sr will be that happy about the way things are going at the moment’.”

“This is Fernando almost becoming bigger than the team and what’s happening with my son, why is he retired, and what’s going on? This isn’t Red Bull where Dietrich Mateschitz loved lots of different racing drivers and loved putting them together seeing them compete and giving an opportunity to many young drivers. This is the father of one driver effectively buying a Formula One team for him. And seeing now the Fernando Alonso phenomenon and he wants his son there any way. We’ll see what happens in Melbourne.”

If Fernando Alonso keeps outperforming his teammate, we can see how that can be a problem for the team and especially Lawrence Stroll. Regardless of it, the team overall would be in a win-win situation.

The Spaniard now has nearly 20 years of experience at the pinnacle of motorsport, having found success in other places as well. While some may criticize him for his moves in the past, the driver disagrees with them as he continues to find his groove.

Speaking with Channel 4 and quoted by Planet F1, Fernando said, “I would say that of 20 years of my career, I had four frustrating years in a McLaren-Honda that was not competitive. But in 16 years of my life I’ve been in Formula 1, fighting for podiums and wins and this is something that is quite unique. Sometimes I feel from the outside that people even are a little bit sorry for my career moves [but] the facts don’t tell me that way, so sometimes I’m happy to clarify that.”

It does appear to be fair reasoning, however, many fans and experts believe it was the four years at McLaren that made all the difference as Alonso was just scraping off points for the team and wasn’t competing as well as he deserved to.
