Lewis Hamilton is confident that Mercedes can challenge Ferrari in Spanish GP

Hamilton acknowledged the fact that despite finishing on the tails of Red Bull in qualifying, the Austrian team might have a bit more pace than them on Sunday. But it is certainly interesting to see how confident he and the team are that they can challenge Ferrari tomorrow.

“Yes, definitely [more confidence in race pace], yesterday was the best race pace that we’ve had so if we can start racing with the Ferraris, for example, that would be amazing. I think the Red Bulls look like they might be quickest, but we might be able to compete with the Ferraris tomorrow and that’s a big step for us,” said Hamilton.

Russell too agreed with his teammate in his prediction of challenging the Ferraris on Sunday. “I think we’ve got a real chance against Ferrari. But Red Bull, especially Max, seems a little bit faster than the rest. So all to play for,” said Russell.

It is interesting to hear both Mercedes drivers believing that they can challenge the Italian team tomorrow. But the Ferraris are still ahead of them on the grid as they finished first and 3rd in qualifying. In comparison to Mercedes, they had a superior pace on Friday.

So it is baffling to hear them so confidently saying that they can challenge one of the fastest cars on the grid in the race tomorrow. But if they really do so, then it would be great for the fans watching around the world.
