Former Renault F1 team boss Cyril Abiteboul enjoyed a long and fairly successful stint in the sport. He served as the Team Principal of Renault from 2014 to 2020. He moved on at the end of last season after a restructure in the teams’ hierarchy. He is currently working as a motorsport advisor to the engineering company Mecachrome.

His recent encounter with former Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo in London drew many headlines. Cyril finally got the tattoo that he promised in 2020 after conceding to a bet by the Aussie. However, another major update followed not long after that meeting. The camera spotted Abiteboul in the Red Bull garage during the Abu Dhabi GP and speculations followed.

2018-19 footages of Cyril arguing with Red Bull boss Horner over lack of power in Renault engines are still fresh in the minds of F1 fans. It surprised many to see the Frenchman in Red Bull’s garage owing to their tumultuous relationship.

Abiteboul confessed to being in the Red Bull garage

After much speculations, Cyril admitted to being present in the former rival’s garage during the season finale. He brushed off any bad blood between the two, no matter their tense history. Notably, Red Bull star Daniel Ricciardo left the Milton Keynes-based team in 2018 and moved to Renault which came as an utter surprise to Horner. A lot of back and forth happened between the two bosses that same season.

Nevertheless, the dust seems to have settled between the two now and new prospects are opening up. In a recent interview reported by PlanetF1, Cyril Abiteboul discussed it at length. “I have to confess I was at Red Bull,” said Abiteboul. “I can admit it because I was spotted there. It’s all right, I’ve chosen the right place!”

“I have worked a lot with Red Bull. People remember our differences, but I also have a lot of respect for this completely results-oriented organization. I want to say that at all costs. Sometimes that was what Renault lacked, that willingness to want to win at all costs.”

“When I see the strategic choices made by Helmut Marko, with Max and with Honda, and the implementation of them by the team in Milton Keynes under Christian’s leadership, I am glad it paid off in the end,” he added.
