Formula 1 is one of the most prestigious sports in the world. With its glitz and glamor, every race weekend brings with it a classy aura and the possibility of having the best time on track. Because F1 is such an intense sport fueled by adrenaline, drivers look to return to ordinary human levels post-race weekends, and what better way to do that than to attend a party? Yes, afterparties are just as common in the F1 community as in the film industry. If there’s one driver guaranteed to have a good time at these parties and make them a good time for everyone else, too, it’s Daniel Ricciardo.

Over the years, the Honey Badger has built a reputation for being just as fierce off-track as he is on track. That’s to say, he’s a certified party animal. While most see it as a quality that only makes Ricciardo more likable, his wild side hasn’t been universally accepted yet and can sometimes come off as less-than-ideal behavior. This is precisely what F1 mogul Eddie Jordan pointed out on his podcast.

Is Daniel Ricciardo’s wild side too wild?

Many people aren’t made for the part scene. Ricciardo is definitely not one of them. As it turns out, a former Red Bull driver is just as inclined to have a blast as the Aussie is. Who is it? David Coulthard. In the Formula For Success Podcast with Eddie Jordan and Coulthard, the pair were asked about the best F1 afterparty they’ve attended. Jordan replied, “There are many afterparties. Singapore has always had a great party. It depends on the timescale of the races.” It wouldn’t be hard to guess that, given the hype around the Monaco GP, the afterparties there would be just as glamorous. 

Jordan revealed what exactly an afterparty in Monte Carlo is like, saying, “If you’re talking about complete madness, the afterparty after Monaco in Anjuna where you (Coulthard) behave very badly, and another person who behaves badly is Daniel Ricciardo. I don’t know what it is between you two. When you set up with each other, it seems to go from bad to worse.” Anjuna—a private and trendy beach and restaurant in Monaco—has become iconic over the years, and it’s party-central after the Monaco GP every season.

Adding on to what he said about the timescale of races, Jordan said, “It’s convenient that everyone is [in Monaco after the race] because Monday is a bank holiday everywhere. And when it’s a Grand Prix in Monaco, it’s easy to go to Anjuna. We flood the place, and it’s become really popular.” Ricciardo is undoubtedly one of the drivers of the party every season, but do you ever wonder why he tries to make the most of every moment he possibly can?

Daniel Ricciardo reveals why he is a party animal

F1 is a tough sport. Every race weekend, there’s just one winner. Everyone else—like Max Versatppen’s father says—is a loser. The thing with F1 is, though, the three drivers who get onto the podium after a race are usually pretty thrilled with their results, which gives them that incentive to celebrate. During his time at Red Bull, Ricciardo got ample opportunities to stand atop the podium, but when he left the team for Renault and then McLaren, his trips got less frequent.

While discussing how he celebrates the good times, Ricciardo revealed he used to be very strict with himself but realized that he should loosen up a little. He said, “In 2015, I realized the lows were real. But if I do have a win or have a podium, I can go enjoy it, go out, have a few drinks, and have a nice dinner with your friends because it doesn’t happen every day. This sport’s so complex. Unfortunately, the good days aren’t that frequent. I do try to enjoy a good day when I have one.”
