Many would refuse to become someone’s hope if they’ve been screwed over by them multiple times. Charles Leclerc is not one of them. The Monegasque has shown Faith in Ferrari and Tifosi and is their only hope at the chance of glory at Baku. Despite having a terrible record and awful luck at Azerbaijan, Leclerc has come forward as the wizard expected to put Ferrari on the top step again based on old evidence. What is this evidence, though?

Ferrari’s 2022 strategy and reliability curse has followed them into 2023. Charles Leclerc is the adversary who’s been affected the most by it. The Monegasque retired from 2 of the 3 races so far. In Bahrain, due to an engine failure, and in Australia, due to a driver error. These troubles sound very much like the 2022 troubles which cost Ferrari and Leclerc a shot at the championship. And to top it all off, the Maranello-based team has only scored 3 podiums at Baku with both the cars retiring from the race last year.

Nevertheless, with hopes that Ferrari has solved the setup issues and the tire wear problem. Charles Leclerc is seen as Ferrari’s ray of hope at Baku. Tom Clarkson suggested Charles Leclerc has been brilliant in Baku despite Ferrari’s terrible record. The F1 Nation podcast host points toward Leclerc’s performance in Baku in various categories and the Bad luck he’s had with reliability issues. He indicated the engine failure and reliability issues Leclerc has had in the past.

According to the F1 Nation podcast, Tom Clarkson said “Ferrari have got a terrible record in Baku because they do. But Charles Leclerc is actually brilliant in Baku. He was in the junior formulas, in formula 2 he was very strong there. He’s always been quick. He’s just, whether it’s been an engine failure or do you remember a few years back when he crashed in FP3, which affected qualifying obviously? But if he can pull together a whole weekend, I think Charles will be quick this weekend.”

If Leclerc can is able to pull off a clean weekend, he very well can challenge for a podium this weekend. However, the upgrade package which is expected to arrive in Baku is not the whole answer to Ferrari’s woes and is only a partial part of a major upgrade.

Ferrari realized the weakness of SF23 and is already working toward upgrades to solve it. However, the upgrade package, which is expected to arrive in Baku, is only considered to be a part of the troubleshooting upgrades and not the whole package. The full potential of the car is limited and can only be extracted once the whole package arrives. The whole package is expected to arrive between the Emilia Romagna GP and the Spanish GP.

According to GPBlog.com a report from Gazzetta Dello Sport suggested: “The developments that will be seen in a week’s time in Baku do not form part of the package of modifications defined to solve the problems that have so far prevented us from extracting the full potential from the Ferrari SF-23. The targeted development plan will unfold between Imola and Montmelò, with perhaps a sort of preview in Miami with regards to the wings.”
