Aston Martin have successfully signed Sebastian Vettel to their team for the 2021 season. The news came as a surprise to many and a shock to some (hint: Sergio Perez). Nevertheless, it certainly means there will more than one world champion in the cockpit of an F1 car in 2021.

As Vettel and his fans continue to celebrate, new details have been revealed of the German’s contract with the British team. These details pertain to his tenure, role, and salary at the Silverstone-based outfit.

As reported by ‘Bild,’ German news website ‘RTL‘ said (translated by Google), “The Vettel contract does not specify a course time. Look from year to year. There is no official confirmation yet: The 33-year-old should remain active for Aston Martin through 2021.”

However, Vettel’s role may not be restricted to ‘driver. The German may apparently take on another role during his time at Aston Martin.

In terms of tenure, Vettel said that this is definitely a long-term project for him. “The goal is not designed for brevity but for long term cooperation.” So rest assured we shall be seeing the German racing even after 2021.

Coming to the part about his salary, here is where Vettel had to compromise. RTL said, “If he has earned 45 million euros so far, according to Bild, around 15 million Euros base salary will flow into his account.”

Taking such a big pay cut would no doubt have distressed Vettel. But in the end, his desire to continue doing what he loves trumped that. Besides, it’s not like the 4-time World Champion would have his post-retirement plans derailed, despite the cut.

The former Williams speaking to Sky F1 said (quoted by RTL), “When you think about the fact that Aston Martin will be playing as a big works team next year, and that with a four-time world champion, then, I have to say, it’s of course marketing related and (but the) speed that Sebastian Vettel has proved to have, (it’s) just a giant step.

The move certainly benefits the team and Vettel alike. The duo could definitely upset the regular-season standings and challenge as front runners. Perhaps a title run is still a long way off, but podiums and a few wins are certainly on the table by the looks of it.
