Mercedes have dominated the F1 scene for the better part of the last decade and it doesn’t seem that this dominance will come to an end anytime soon.

Currently, they are very well set up for bagging their seventh consecutive Constructors’ Championship. The Silver Arrows head into the British Grand Prix with a 66 point lead over second-placed Red Bull.

However, the Brackley-based outfit’s Team Principal, Toto Wolff, doesn’t think a seventh championship is already sealed. As per Motorsport, the Mercedes boss said, “There is not one fiber in us that thinks that this championship is done.

“It’s something that can really catch you out.”

Wolff also agreed that one team dominating the sport is rather boring. However, he doesn’t feel that it is Mercedes’ responsibility to ensure that F1 remains entertaining.

He said, “It is not up to the team that has made steps to be seen as responsible for the predictability of the championship.

“On the other side, dominance from a single team, whether it is us, whether it is Red Bull in the 2010 years, or whether it was Ferrari in the early 2000s is something that is always a bit odd for the Championship.

Mercedes boss hopes that their rivals can raise their performances

The Silver Arrows’ Team Principal feels that Mercedes’ competitors need to buck up in a bid to provide fans with the level of competition they deserve to witness week in and week out.

Wolff said, “We are very keen in racing against our fantastic competitors. We like to be out there fighting against Ferrari and Red Bull. We like the challenger brands like Racing Point to be part of the game.

“And on the other side, McLaren and Renault need to find a way back to the front.”

Furthermore, Wolff said that he would embrace an increase in the performance levels of their rivals. “I would wish for nothing more than a strong competition with an unknown outcome every Friday we start FP1.

“But it’s very difficult in our position to really change the pecking order at that stage.”

However, Wolff’s wish is unlikely to materialize in the near future. At least not this season. The Mercedes W11 is still light years away from any other car on the grid, so don’t expect a dramatic turn of events at the British Grand Prix.

Nevertheless, as fans, the least we can do is hope. Hope for someone to step up at Silverstone and prevent a Mercedes 1-2.  However, the chances of that happening seem pretty dismal.
